Foot Tape (1) Petzl

Foot Tape is part of a rescue plan and used after a fall and the worker is now suspended in their harness.

If a worker falls and is suspended in their harness, it is important to rescue them as soon as possible to prevent suspension trauma, which can occur due to the prolonged immobility and pressure on the harness. Suspension trauma can cause serious medical complications, including fainting, reduced blood flow, and even death.

The amount of time a worker can be suspended in their harness before the risk of suspension trauma becomes a significant concern depends on various factors, including the individual's health, the harness design, and the conditions of the fall. However, in general, it is recommended that a worker should be rescued within 15-20 minutes of suspension to minimize the risk of suspension trauma.

Therefore, it is critical to have an effective fall protection plan in place and ensure that workers receive proper training and equipment to prevent falls and promptly rescue them if a fall does occur. Employers should also have emergency procedures in place to respond quickly to fall-related accidents and minimize the risk of serious injury.

Petzl foot tape, also known as foot loops, is designed to be used in conjunction with a harness to help reduce the risk of suspension trauma in the event of a fall. Here are the steps to use Petzl foot tape to reduce suspension trauma:

  1. Before using the foot tape, make sure it is compatible with your harness and is properly installed according to the manufacturer's instructions.

  2. If you fall and are suspended in your harness try to keep moving your legs and body to promote blood flow.

  3. Attach the foot tape to your harness using the attachment point on the front of the harness, which is typically a sewn loop or a metal ring. Alternatively you can attach to an ascender using a carabiner and attach the ascender to the safety line placing the ascender on the safety line, this offers the possibility of maneuvering on the safety line offering more rescue options

  4. Slide one foot through the foot loop and position it under your buttocks. This will allow you to relieve pressure on your leg muscles and maintain circulation.

  5. Repeat the process for the other foot, making sure both feet are securely positioned in the loops.

  6. If possible, use your arms to lift yourself up slightly and take pressure off the harness.

  7. Once you have stabilized yourself, try to stay as calm as possible and wait for rescue.

It is important to note that while foot tape can help reduce the risk of suspension trauma, it is not a substitute for prompt rescue. Therefore, it is critical to have an effective fall protection plan in place and ensure that workers receive proper training and equipment to prevent falls and promptly rescue them if a fall does occur.
