Stabilize the top of the Ladder with a Standoff

A ladder standoff is one of the cheapest pieces of safety gear that pays for itself the first time it keeps you from tipping. Ladders get unstable fast when you lean to reach a corner or work near a gutter line — a standoff widens your base of support and holds the top of the ladder away from the surface, so you're not grinding rails into siding or glass.
Wide Mode vs. Deep Mode
The ProTool Ladder StandOff bolts onto any extension ladder and gives you two configurations:
- Wide mode — extends roughly 4–6 feet beyond the ladder rails on each side. Use this when you need lateral reach without repositioning the ladder, such as running a squeegee across a large pane or cleaning a row of sidelites.
- Deep mode — pushes the ladder 12–28 inches away from the wall. This clears window frames, shutters, and gutters so you can work directly above the glass instead of reaching over an obstruction.
Most pros default to wide mode for residential route work and switch to deep mode when a gutter or protruding frame gets in the way. Swapping between the two takes under a minute.
Why It Matters on Every Setup
Ladder tip-overs account for a disproportionate share of window cleaning injuries, and most happen during a lateral reach. A standoff doesn't replace good ladder practice — proper angle, solid footing, three points of contact — but it adds a margin that the ladder alone can't provide. It also protects the surface: no scuffed siding, no cracked stucco, no scratched glass from a rail sliding sideways.
Pair It With These
A standoff handles the top of the ladder. For the base, LeveLok Ladder Levelers handle uneven ground without shims. And if you're working above head height on any kind of slope or soft surface, the ProTool Ladder Quick Click locks onto gutters and fascia for an extra anchor point. For the full range of stabilizers and levelers, see the Ladders and Accessories category.
Watch the ProTool Ladder StandOff video for a walkthrough of both modes and mounting.
