How To Apply F9 BARC

F9 BARC (Battery Acid Restoration Cleaner) is the go-to rust and stain remover for contractors working on concrete, brick, stone, and masonry. It handles battery acid burns, fertilizer stains, irrigation rust, and organic metal stains that other chemicals leave behind. Knowing how to apply F9 BARC correctly is the difference between a one-pass removal and a callback.
What F9 BARC Actually Removes
F9 BARC targets metallic oxide stains — the orange, brown, and black discoloration caused by:
- Battery acid burns on concrete and asphalt
- Fertilizer stains on sidewalks, driveways, and curbing
- Irrigation rust from sprinkler heads and well water
- Rust bleed from rebar, flashing, or metal fixtures
- Tannin and organic metal stains on stone
It is not a general-purpose cleaner. If the stain is grease, oil, or efflorescence, reach for F9 Double Eagle or F9 Efflorescence & Calcium Remover instead.
Equipment You Need
F9 BARC is a downstream or direct-apply chemical — you do not run it through a high-pressure pump. A typical setup:
- Chemical sprayer — a 2-gallon acid-resistant pump sprayer works for spot treatments; a ProTool Power Sprayer handles larger areas faster
- Pressure washer for rinse — a 4.0 GPM cold water pressure washer or equivalent for the post-dwell rinse
- Surface cleaner — a ProTool 18" surface cleaner for flatwork after chemical treatment
- PPE — chemical-resistant gloves, splash-proof goggles, and appropriate footwear. F9 BARC is acidic; skin and eye contact must be avoided
Dilution Rates
F9 BARC ships as a concentrate. Dilution depends on stain severity:
- Heavy battery acid burns: apply full strength
- Moderate rust and fertilizer stains: 1:1 (one part BARC to one part water)
- Light irrigation rust: 1:3 to 1:5
Always test on an inconspicuous area first. On polished or acid-sensitive stone (marble, limestone, travertine), F9 BARC can etch the surface. It is formulated for concrete, brick, and standard masonry.
Application Process
- Pre-wet the surface. A dry substrate absorbs chemical too fast and reduces dwell effectiveness. Wet the area with a garden hose or low-pressure rinse — damp, not pooling.
- Apply F9 BARC. Spray an even coat over the stained area. Work in manageable sections so you can monitor dwell time.
- Let it dwell. Typical dwell is 5–10 minutes. You will see the stain begin to dissolve and lighten. On heavy burns, a second application after the first rinse may be needed. Do not let it dry on the surface.
- Agitate if needed. Stubborn stains benefit from light scrubbing with a stiff-bristle brush during dwell. This is common on deep battery acid burns.
- Rinse thoroughly. Pressure-wash the treated area at 2,500–4,000 PSI. A surface cleaner gives the most uniform result on flatwork. Rinse beyond the treated zone to prevent visible tide lines.
- Neutralize. After rinsing, apply ProTool Post Rinse to neutralize residual acidity and protect the surface.
Common Mistakes
- Applying to a dry surface. The chemical absorbs unevenly, leaving blotchy results and wasting product.
- Letting it dry. Dried BARC can leave a white residue that requires retreatment. Keep it wet during dwell.
- Skipping the neutralizer. Residual acid can continue reacting with the substrate, especially on colored concrete or pavers.
- Using it on the wrong stain. BARC is for metallic oxide stains. Grease, oil, and efflorescence need different chemistry.
- Overapplying on sensitive stone. Acid-sensitive natural stone (limestone, marble) can etch. Test first, or use a different product.
Coverage and Sizing
At full strength, one gallon of F9 BARC covers approximately 50–200 sq ft depending on porosity and stain depth. For large-scale jobs — parking garages, commercial lots, HOA sidewalks — the F9 Sample Pack (4 gallons) lets you carry BARC alongside Double Eagle and Groundskeeper in a single order.
When to Combine With Other F9 Products
Real-world hardscape jobs rarely have a single stain type. A parking garage has battery acid burns and oil drips and tire marks. The F9 system is designed for this:
- F9 Double Eagle for grease, oil, and carbon-based stains
- F9 Groundskeeper for general concrete maintenance
- F9 Efflorescence & Calcium Remover for white mineral buildup
- F9 Knockdown for heavy degreasing and pre-treatment
Apply each product to its target stain, rinse, and move to the next. BARC is always the last acidic step before neutralizing.
Safety Considerations
F9 BARC is an acid-based product. Standard precautions:
- Wear chemical-resistant nitrile gloves and splash-proof goggles
- Avoid contact with vegetation — pre-wet and cover adjacent plantings, or apply Plant Wash before and after
- Do not mix with bleach (sodium hypochlorite) — the combination produces toxic chlorine gas
- Store in a cool, shaded area away from metals
